An allergist/immunologist is a physician who has been trained for three years in pediatrics or internal medicine and completed an additional two to three years of training in allergy and immunology at an accrediated training program. Most are certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, or American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Some are further certified in Clinical Laboratory Immunology.

The allergist/immunologist is uniquely trained in eliciting detailed histories, appropriate testing and formulating management plans to maintain stability of asthma, allergy, and immunology problems.

The allergist/immunologist is the best qualified physician to manage the comprehensive needs of those patients with involvement of several organ systems including nasal, eye, ear, lung, skin and gastrointestinal tract.
